Care Summary

The Vlamingii is one of those fish that belongs in a public aquarium, and if you are keeping one in anything under 300 gallons you are doing it a disservice. Males in display condition develop a pronounced snout bump and neon-blue scribbling patterns that are genuinely unlike anything else in the surgeonfish family. They are heavy feeders, so plan for significant bioload and a robust skimmer before you even consider acquiring one. The species rarely shows disease when kept in proper conditions but deteriorates fast in undersized or stressful environments.
