Hammer Coral
Euphyllia ancora
Care Summary
Euphyllia ancora, the Hammer Coral, is one of the best all-around LPS in the hobby — T-shaped or anchor-shaped tentacle tips, good color variety, and enough toughness for intermediate and beginner tanks alike. Mid-tank placement under moderate light with medium, indirect flow; turbulent flow causes the tentacles to retract and stays retracted, which defeats the whole point of keeping a hammer. The aggression catch is significant — hammer corals extend long sweeper tentacles at night, and they will win any contact with nearby corals, so give it a buffer zone of at least six inches. Feed weekly with mysis or meaty foods; well-fed hammers split heads faster and maintain the thick, inflated tentacle tips that make this coral worth the price tag.
